About Me

I am an intern (junior doctor/FY1 ) with an MBBS degree from a private medical college in India. While I was an average student initially, I discovered my ability to study effectively during my final exams. I didn’t enter the medical field out of passion, but due to family pressure and indecision. However, as I progressed, I started appreciating the career, especially the respect, financial stability, and interest in the human body it offers.

Current Academic Standing

Over 50% of my internship is complete, and I find myself mostly handling paperwork. The pressure to prepare for post-graduate (PG) exams is building. My college environment was not very studious, with many students focused on partying rather than academics. I got involved in such a culture but eventually distanced myself, learning to study independently. I also experienced a personal setback in a long-term relationship, which led to trust issues but also personal growth. If I had been in a more academic environment, I might have considered preparing for PG exams earlier, but it’s never too late.

Thoughts for the Future

For the past few months, I have been exploring potential PG fields, but my lack of experience has been challenging. My father is a surgeon, and his demanding life has made me hesitant about pursuing surgery. Here's what I desire for my future:

  1. A field that maintains a clinical connection: I want a semi-clinical or clinical branch where I feel like a doctor, potentially influenced by the social status of clinical branches in India.
  2. The option to study abroad: Many of my relatives live in the UK and the US, so I would prefer a field that offers the opportunity to study abroad.
  3. Work-life balance: I aim for a career that doesn't encroach on my personal life, especially since I plan to get married soon.
  4. Option for private practice: Eventually, I’d like to open my own clinic for a more stable financial future and to diversify income sources.

India vs. Abroad?

This is a major decision as my parents prefer PG in India, my brother supports studying in the UK, and other relatives suggest the US. I'm fortunate to have these options and am evaluating each:

  1. India: The leniency and earning potential for doctors here are appealing, with a strong demand for skills. However, the standard of living, rising inflation, and safety concerns are drawbacks. The competitiveness in PG exams is also a challenge.
  2. UK: I haven’t visited yet, but I’ve heard that the UK offers the best work-life balance and a fair income. I also believe a UK degree could hold value if I return to India. The expenses in the UK are lower compared to private PG in India and the US.
  3. US: The US offers the highest earnings, but the USMLE and immigration hurdles pose obstacles. I’m considering working in the UK for a year, as it might provide an eligible degree to work in the US later.

Final Thoughts

I’m leaning towards the UK pathway, but I am concerned that my education in India hasn’t built my confidence to be a competent doctor internationally.
